LINCOLN, Neb. -- Knocked unconscious in last weeks game, Nebraska quarterback Tommy Armstrong Jr. wasnt medically cleared to play against Minnesota until hours before the Saturday night.Everything was going great until the third quarter when he injured his left ankle on a sneak and needed help to the sideline. When the offense returned to the field early in the fourth, Memorial Stadium roared at the sight of Armstrong, and he went on to lead the No. 19 Cornhuskers 91 yards to the tiebreaking touchdown in a 24-17 victory.Armstrong scored the winner himself, tweaked his hamstring as he crossed the goal line and was carried to the bench by offensive linemen Tanner Farmer and Jerald Foster like a conquering hero.Tommy is the toughest dude Ive been around, said safety Kieron Williams, who finished off the Gophers with an interception with 1:29 left. A lot of quarterbacks wouldnt have played a snap. People can say what they want about him. I wouldnt want to go to war with any other quarterback. The Huskers (8-2, 5-2 Big Ten) still need to win out and have Wisconsin lose once in order to reach the conference championship game. But the night was a perfect re-set for a team that had lost two straight, including that humiliating 62-3 beat-down at Ohio State last week.Armstrong, who spent the week going through the concussion protocol, played one of his best games in weeks and outperformed Minnesotas Mitch Leidner. Armstrong was 19 for 27 for 217 yards with two touchdowns, and he ran nine times for 61 yards. His last run was a 13-yarder to break a 17-17 tie with 7:17 left. Before starting the winning drive, offensive coordinator Danny Langsdorf and coach Mike Riley asked Armstrong if there were certain types of plays he didnt want called because of his health.I had to suck it up and know I would be OK, Armstrong said. I told them to open up the playbook. If we needed quarterback runs, I was there to run. If we needed to throw outside the pocket, I could do that, too.Riley said Armstrongs competitiveness showed through against the Gophers (7-3, 4-3).He doesnt ever like to come out of the game. He always thinks hes going to make the next play, Riley said.Nebraska allowed a season-low 265 total yards, with Aaron Williams and Josh Banderas making 11 tackles apiece. The Huskers trailed at halftime for a fourth straight game. Newby tied it 17-all in the third quarter, taking a screen pass from Armstrong 31 yards to the end zone. You go the road and you have a chance, said Gophers coach Tracy Claeys, whose team had its four-game winning streak end. But we didnt play well enough in the second half to win the ball game; Nebraska played better than we did.THE TAKEAWAYMinnesota: The Gophers lost control of their destiny in the Big Ten West. They might regret some of their play-calling against the Huskers. Other than a few occasions Rodney Smith bounced to the outside for good runs, it was mostly futile for them to try to run up the middle.Nebraska: If anyone doubted Armstrongs toughness, he proved his mettle. He also showed he is the most important player on this team. If he goes down, the Huskers are in deep trouble.POLL IMPLICATIONSWith Virginia Tech and North Carolina losing, Nebraska could move up a spot or two.SHUTDOWN DEFENSEMinnesota out-yarded the Huskers 172-137 in the first half but managed only 93 yards and no points the rest of the way.We were a little out of whack and not playing our ball, Banderas said. Older guys took charge and knew what we had to do.UP NEXTMinnesota hosts Northwestern, which shut out the Gophers 27-0 last year.Nebraska hosts Maryland in the first meeting of the teams.---More AP college football at http://collegefootball.ap.orgKevin Byard Youth Jersey . FLORHAM PARK, N.J. -- Chan Gailey realizes theres plenty of blame to go around when it comes to the problems with the New York Jets offense. He also knows its his job to solve them. From the quarterback to the running game to the offensive line. Its just not all fitting together, the offensive coordinator said Thursday. Weve got one little thing here, one little thing there, but those little things tend to add up. Its just not clicking yet and weve just got to keep getting everybody on the same page. That goes back to me making sure everybody gets on the same page. The struggling Jets are turning to a new chapter as far as their quarterback goes, with Todd Bowles making the switch from Ryan Fitzpatrick to Geno Smith. The move came Wednesday with New York mired in a four-game losing streak and Fitzpatrick having thrown an NFL-leading 11 interceptions and just five touchdowns in a 1-5 start. The way that we played on offense the last four weeks, something had to change, Fitzpatrick said, so I guess I was the change.New York ranks 26th in overall offense and last in the NFL in scoring with 15.8 points per game and red-zone offense with eight TDs in 22 trips inside opponents 20-yard line (36.4 percent). If it was one area, you could fix one area, but unfortunately, weve got too many areas that are not executing in the way that I think were capable, Gailey said. Its my responsibility to get them to go out there and execute better. Thats where we are right now.The Jets have scored just seven total second-half points over the last four games, and that TD came on a 42-yard fumble recovery by Charone Peake after Fitzpatrick was sacked late in the fourth quarter of a 27-17 loss to Seattle in Week 4.Its a far cry from last season, when the Jets set franchise marks with 5,925 yards of total offense, 4,057 yards passing and 362 passes completed. Fitzpatrick threw a team-record 31 touchdown passes, and Brandon Marshall and Eric Decker combined for 26 TD catches, the most in the NFL.Its not one thing, Gailey said. Were not doing the things that we need to do that we did last year that were capable of, in my opinion. Were not getting them done. Theres no excuses.Fitzpatrick was done in by making mistakes at inopportune times, with his six-interception performance at Kansas City in Week 3 the start of the struggles.Decker is done for the season with a shooulder injury, and added hip surgery on top of it.dddddddddddd So, the receiving corps includes three rookies in Peake, Jalin Marshall and Robby Anderson -- all trying to help fill the void.Matt Forte got off to a terrific start with 196 yards and three touchdowns in his first two games, but has just 164 yards and no TDs in the four games since. Thats caused some doubts as to whether the 30-year-old running back has much of anything left. It also has raised concerns about the run blocking, which has the Jets sitting at 21st in the league with 92.5 yards per game.We did it last year, and I think we can get back to it, said Gailey, whose rushing offense ranked 10th in his first season with the Jets. For now, the quick fix is at quarterback, and Smith steps in as a starter for the first time since the season finale at Miami in 2014, when he threw for 358 yards and three TDs with a perfect 158.3 passer rating.Smith was on his way last summer to remaining the starter until then-teammate Ikemefuna Enemkpali threw a punch during a locker-room dispute that broke his jaw -- opening the door for Fitzpatrick to have one of the best statistical seasons in team history.Other than mop-up duty in two games since, including last Monday night at Arizona , Smith has had to sit and wait during the last 14 months -- sometimes getting antsy -- for this type of opportunity.I think hes learned a lot more football, Gailey said. I think he understands a lot more of whats happening in the game, in general: what defenses are trying to do, how we need to try to beat them, what were thinking. I do think hes come a long way in that respect. I think hes a lot better.Gailey insisted he fully supported Bowles decision to sit Fitzpatrick, despite the fact he and the quarterback have a long history that dates to their days together in Buffalo. Hes only concerned now with getting Smith up to speed and having him help solve the woes that have plagued the Jets offense.I think all of us have a lot of confidence in him, Gailey said of Smith. H
