Owen clotheslined Bret mid-match and then, with Backlund having locked in the crossface chickenwing, begged his parents to throw in Brets towel. Legendary wrestling trainer Stu refused but Helen did not, ending Brets agony but handing Backlund the belt.The Rocks in-ring debut - 1996 Rock - and his dodgy haircut - starred in 1996 Dwayne The Rock Johnson would probably wince if he saw the haircut he wore for his first WWE match - in fact, he did! Taker outdid himself a year later, though, defeating Hulk Hogan, albeit with the help of Ric Flair and a steel chair, to claim the first of his seven world titles in WWE.The Rock and Vince McMahon join forces - 1998 The Great One landed the WWE Title in 1998 The 1998 edition of Survivor Series is the only one not to feature a traditional elimination match, with the pay-per-view instead focusing on the Deadly Games tournament for the vacant WWE Title. The Rock triumphed to earn his first reign as world champion - but ventured to the dark side in order to prevail. The Great One seemed at a distinct disadvantage when he met the Vince McMahon-supported Mankind in the final, but a shock twist saw McMahon call for the referee to the ring the bell before Mankind tapped out to the Sharpshooter, reminiscent of the Screwjob a year earlier.
