RIO DE JANEIRO -- Britain was thoroughly outplayed, yet weathered everything the star-studded Netherlands team could muster.Somehow, the British escaped the onslaught and got to a shootout with the game tied at 3-3 after regulation. Maddie Hinch did not allow a goal in the shootout, and Hollie Webb scored the clincher for Britain to claim its first gold medal in womens field hockey.Married couple Kate and Helen Richardson-Walsh won gold medals together for Britain. Helen scored the first goal in the shootout, a penalty stroke. Its really, really special, Kate said as she stood next to Helen. To win an Olympic medal is special. To win an Olympic medal with your wife there next to you, taking a penalty in the pressure moments is so special, and we will cherish this for the rest of our lives. The Netherlands was trying to become the first nation to win three consecutive gold medals on the womens side Friday night. The Netherlands had five players who were pursuing their third gold.We did everything we needed to do, Netherlands coach Alyson Annan said. I think we played a fantastic game. We dominated the whole game, and we played as we should have and as we wanted to. Tactically, we were strong. Technically, we were strong. Physically, mentally, we were the better team. That makes it much more disappointing. After Helen Richardson-Walshs penalty stroke, Hinch took care of business in the goal.Goalkeeping has its highs and lows, Hinch said. You can be the villain, but you can also be the hero for the moment. But for me today, that was a huge team effort. We knew the Dutch would have their moments. They are a fantastic side.Just getting the match to penalty strokes bordered on the miraculous, but Britain had developed a habit of closing strong throughout the Rio Games. The British were outshot 17-2 in the first three periods, yet trailed just 3-2. Britains Nicola White scored midway through the fourth period after a rebound on a penalty corner to tie the match.Britain held on and left it in the capable hands of its goalkeeper. You could see our faces when it went to shuffles, their faces just dropped and our faces kind of lit up, Britains Lily Owsley said. Its our thing, its Maddies thing. The Netherlands attacked hard from the beginning, as usual. The Dutch were awarded a penalty stroke with 9:24 remaining in the first period after contact in the circle, but Hinch blocked Maartje Paumens shot to keep the match scoreless. Britain came back three minutes later when Owsley tapped one in off a rebound.Kitty van Males high shot over Hinch evened the score early in the second period.Maartje Paumen scored on a penalty corner, but Britains Crista Cullen scored 42 seconds later to even the score again.Van Male scored again on a deflection on a penalty corner midway through the third period, then White scored to force the shootout. After the match, Owsley said the team will enjoy the nightlife. We are going to have a few orange juices and see what Rio has to offer, she said.---Follow Cliff Brunt on Twitter CliffBruntAP . SAN DIEGO -- As Philadelphia Phillies starter Jerad Eickhoffs record attests, he has pitched in tough luck most of the 2016 season.Eickhoff, 26, is 6-12 despite a 3.68 ERA in 22 starts. His won-loss is really misleading, Phillies manager Pete Mackanin said recently. We havent consistently gotten him a lot of runs and hes lost a lot of close decisions. But Eickhoff could be catching a break Sunday when hes matched against Padres right-hander Jarred Cosart in the rubber match of a three-game series at Petco Park. There is this triple whammy hanging over the Padres this season. The Padres have struggled on Sundays (3-14), in day games (10-25) and in final games of series (8-27).And all three of the Padres problems are in play Sunday as they end a six-game homestand. The Padres have fared better recently in series finales (5-4 in the last nine) and day games (4-5). But they have made little gains on Sunday.I dont know what it is, Padres manager Andy Green said recently of the triple whammy. But Im pretty sure its most coincidence.Plus some lopsided pitching matchups, which it appears there is another one Sunday afternoon. As Mackanin said, Eickhoff deserves better. He has allowed only 129 hits in 132 innings. With a 112-31 strikeout-to-walk ratio, opponents have hit only .258 against him.And the Padres didnt come close to faring that well when Eickhoff faced them on April 13 in Philadelphia. Eickhoff shut out the Padres on four hits in seven innings and picked up the win in his only previous start against San Diego.dddddddddddd He didnt walk a batter and had nine strikeouts. In Eickhoffs two most recent starts, he has allowed one run and seven hits in 12 innings.Meanwhile, Cosart will be making his second start as a Padre. He went only 3 1/3 innings in his first outing, didnt allow a run and gave up only one hit. But he issued six walks and threw 77 pitches, of which only 34 were strikes. We like the stuff, Green said of the 26-year-old right-hander acquired in the July 29 trade that sent right-hander Andrew Cashner to the Marlins. The pitches are there, he just needs to command what he has.Cosart made four starts earlier in the season with the Marlins, although he was with Triple-A New Orleans when the trade was completed. Cosart was 0-1 with the Marlins with a 5.95 ERA. But during the final five starts of 2015, he was 1-1 with a 2.96 ERA.Starting pitching has become a major concern for the Padres. Short starts have been taxing the bullpen, which explains why the team is carrying eight relievers and Saturday replaced one veteran left-handed reliever (Matt Thornton) with another (Clayton Richard).Thornton is a one-inning pitcher. Richard can work longer and could spot start between now and the end of the season if the Padres need rotation help and Tyson Ross isnt available aroun
