LANDOVER, Md. -- Cam Newton threw for 300 yards, Carolinas running game was overwhelmingly effective and an aggressive defense forced three turnovers. It was just like last year for the Panthers. Unfortunately for Carolina, there almost certainly will be no Super Bowl at the end of the season for the defending NFC champions.Though the Panthers did just about everything right Monday night in a 26-15 win over the Washington Redskins, its been a rough encore for a team that went 15-1 before breezing into the Super Bowl.Carolina (6-8) has battled through injuries, free-agent defections and inexperience at key positions. On Monday night, the Panthers showed just how good they can be when performing to their potential. For us, our challenge all year has been playing a complete game, Newton said.Battered, bruised and weary from a seasons worth of hard hits, the agile quarterback showed his frustration when he tossed the ball at Washingtons Trent Murphy on a play in the second quarter. Newton was flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct after Murphy roughed him up a bit as he was sliding to the ground.Ive got to be better than that, Newton said. When it came to flinging the ball at his receivers, Newton was better than usual. He went 21 for 37 with two touchdowns and didnt turn the ball over.He was backed by a solid running game led by Jonathan Stewart, who amassed a season-high 132 yards on 25 carries.Throw in a defense that allowed only one touchdown, and youve got the 2015 Panthers. They loaded the box up, backers were shooting the gap, Redskins tackle Trent Williams said. Thats the same front seven they went to the Super Bowl with. Thats a good group of guys. The Panthers on Monday night looked nothing like the group that started 1-5 and got beat by such scores as 22-10 and 40-7.We had a bit of continuity, coach Ron Rivera said. Weve got an offensive line thats played together for what, four weeks now? Weve got a group of young corners that have played together for five weeks now. We ran the ball very effectively today.Carolina has only a mathematical chance of getting back to the playoffs, but thats not what drives the Panthers as the season draws to end.Asked what the team is playing for, Newton replied with one word: Wins. Were playing for a ton of pride and the guy next to us, defensive end Wes Horton said. Even if we didnt have a playoff scenario, were still going to fight to the end. Our objective is to go undefeated the rest of the season.Rivera insisted upon it.Coach challenged us as man, as players, as professionals, to come out and do our job, Newton said. Thats what we tried to do today, and we did it.Newton arrived fashionably late for his postgame session wearing a pink hat, checkered suit, blue tie and sneakers -- even though Rivera told the team they could travel home in sweat suits.Newton said his attire was a tribute to Craig Sager, an NBA analyst who died recently of cancer.---For more NFL coverage: http://www.pro32.ap.org and http://www.twitter.com/AP-NFLKellen Winslow Jersey .J. -- Marty Brodeur beat the Pittsburgh Penguins yet again. TORONTO -- DeMar DeRozan had clearly been itching for the start of the regular season. Like so many other veterans, he had to grind his way through exhibition games in training camp, gradually moving from 11 points in his first preseason game, to 15, to 20 and finally to 34 in the final warm-up game last week. His patience was rewarded Wednesday night as the Olympic gold medalist had 40 points in the Toronto Raptors 109-91 season-opening victory over the Detroit Pistons, his third career 40-point outing and just two off his career high.Preseason (stunk), he said. But youve got to do it and now the real deal is here and youre just trying to catch a rhythm.DeRozan made a career-high 17 field goals on 27 shots and was a perfect 6 for 6 from the free throw line, while Jonas Valanciunas was 10 for 15 from the field to go along with 11 rebounds. Valanciunas previous career high was 31, also against the Pistons, on Jan. 12, 2015.According to Elias Sports Bureau, the duo became the first teammates in NBA history with a 40-point game and a 30-point game in a season opener. DeRozan also broke Vince Carters opening-night franchise record of 39 points, set against the-then New Jersey Nets in 2003.I never keep track, DeRozan said of his record-breaking exploits. Somebody always informs me after the game.Valanciunas also played down his accomplishment, despite registering his second career 30-point game, as the Raptors led from the 5:13 mark of the first quarter and never looked back.Eighty-one games to go, he said. We should not get too excited; this is just the start.Tobias Harris had 22 points and Marcus Morris had 17 points and nine rebounds for the Pistons, who lost for the eighth time in their last 11 games against Toronto.Coach Stan Van Gundy was particularly irked with his teams defensive play in losing their season opener for the fifth time in seven years, especially the fact that Detroit was outrebounded 51-40. It didnt help that center Andre Drummond left the court after getting elbowed in the jaw by Valanciunas early in the first quarter, though he later returned. The rebounding was a major concern, he said. (Giving up) 54 points in the paint was a major concern and 29 ffree throw attempts, so that just means the team took it right at you.ddddddddddddTIP-INSPistons: Henry Ellenson, Detroits first-round draft pick last June (18th overall) went scoreless in 2:10 of play, while second-round selection Michael Gbinije (49th overall), had two points in 2:10.Raptors: C Lucas Nogueira (ankle) sat out. .
