MADISON, Wis. -- ?? At some point this week, Wisconsin linebacker Vince Biegel will stand up in front of his teammates and deliver a speech about what it means to beat Minnesota. There is so much more on the line this year than just Paul Bunyans Axe.Defeat the Gophers on Saturday in the annual rivalry game and the fifth-ranked Badgers can reap an even bigger reward.Whenever we play Minnesota, I feel like there (are) always implications on the line. There are a lot of story lines, obviously the axe, the border battle. I know we recruit the same type of players they recruit, Biegel, a senior, said Monday.Oh, one more prize too awaits Wisconsin (9-2, 6-2 Big Ten, No. 7 CFP) with a win.We want to represent the West (division) in the Big Ten championship game, Biegel said.Minnesota-Wisconsin has been a one-sided rivalry of late . Wisconsin has won 12 straight, the longest streak by either team in a series that dates to the 1890s.By kickoff on Saturday, the Badgers could even be in a position in which they have already clinched the West. Nebraska, which is tied with Wisconsin atop the West, would be eliminated with a loss at Iowa on Friday. If that happens, the Badgers would win the division even with a loss to Minnesota because they hold the tiebreaker by virtue of their 23-17 victory last month over the Cornhuskers. As has been the case all season though, the Badgers are showing no signs of overconfidence.Nobody wants the feeling of another team coming in here, taking that trophy from you, senior cornerback Sojourn Shelton said. I can only imagine how it would feel for Minnesota to do that. The Gophers (8-3, 5-3) are no pushovers. Two weeks ago, Minnesota played No. 17 Nebraska tough on the road before losing 24-17. Last week, Minnesota closed out its home schedule with an impressive 29-12 victory over Northwestern. Its always special to play in this game, said coach Paul Chryst, a Madison native who attended Minnesota-Wisconsin games as a child and then later played for the Badgers. A lot of respect for Minnesota and the way theyre playing. As a way to remind players of the importance of retaining the axe, a Wisconsin strength coach has asked seniors to continue a tradition of giving speeches at some point this week about whats at stake. A few years ago, former Badger and current Houston Texans star J.J. Watt gave a pep talk that was shown on a big-screen television after a practice.Biegel declined to share with reporters what he would tell teammates, though the Wisconsin native offered clues. He recalls fondly how the Badgers were able to keep the axe the last time the rivalry game was played in Madison two years ago.I think the fans are invested in this as much as we are, Biegel said. Theyve got family in Minnesota. There are ties on both sides. Its a border battle. To be able to bring back the axe, protect Camp Randall ... its another special moment.Game notes NT Olive Sagapolu will miss a sixth straight game with a right arm injury. ... Wisconsin listed the following injured players as questionable: FB Austin Ramesh and OL Jacob Maxwell have right shoulder injuries, while backup LB Zack Baun has a left leg injury. ... The Badgers will honor its senior class on Saturday, with 13 players to be introduced before kickoff. Meanwhile, there were huge victories for Sunderland and West Ham over fellow relegation rivals, leaving the battle to avoid the drop up for grabs with the bottom 11 teams separated by just six points. Eden Hazard and Fernando Torres scored second-half goals to seal a fourth straight victory for Chelsea, which climbed above Arsenal and Manchester City in the standings ahead of their games on Monday and Sunday respectively. ALAMEDA, Calif. -- After playing perhaps his worst game as a pro on the biggest stage hes had in three seasons in the NFL, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr wanted to get back on the field the day after his loss in Kansas City.Instead, Carr will have to wait 10 days for another shot when Oakland (10-3) visits San Diego (5-8) on Sunday.Despite that loss, the Raiders can clinch a playoff spot with a win against the Chargers and end a 13-year postseason drought. That would complete a remarkable turnaround for a team that started Carrs rookie season in 2014 with 10 straight losses.Starting 0-10 was not fun, Carr said Wednesday. It makes these moments so awesome. It makes these moments really to already have 10 wins. I know for our team our sole focus is beating the Chargers because if we dont, were still hoping and wishing.Oaklands 21-13 loss to Kansas City (10-3) last week cost the Raiders control of the AFC West with the Chiefs holding the tiebreaker by virtue of sweeping the season series.Oakland can still win the division by posting a better record than Kansas City over the final three games or get in as a wild-card team with another win.But the main focus will be fixing an offense that struggled to move the ball in the air in frigid Kansas City against the Chiefs. Carr went 17 for 41 for 117 yards, posting a career-low 49.1 rating. Carr had his second-lowest completion percentage in a game and set a worst with 2.85 yards per attempt. It was just execution, it was literally inches, Carr said. There were a whole bunch of plays I think about that we always hit that for whatever reason, sometimes it was good feet and the route was good and we just missed by an inch. Sometimes that happens in practice and you never want it to happen in games. It hadnt happened in games much at all this season for Carr and the Raiders, who have uused their high-powered passing game to become one of the top teams in the league.ddddddddddddDespite the rough day against the Chiefs, Carr still has thrown for 3,492 yards, 24 touchdowns and only five interceptions for a 96 passer rating and taken only 13 sacks.Amari Cooper has already topped 1,000 yards receiving and Michael Crabtree could join him with 194 yards in the final three games, giving Oakland its first pair of 1,000-yard receivers since Hall of Famers Jerry Rice and Tim Brown did it in 2001.But Carr struggled to get the ball to either Cooper or Crabtree last week as they combined for 50 yards receiving on 17 targets. One pass in particular, still haunts Oakland. On a third down midway through the fourth quarter, Carr eluded pressure and launched a deep ball to an open Cooper, who got behind the defense and appeared ready to score a touchdown. But at the last minute the ball mysteriously changed directions and fell incomplete as Cooper was unable to adjust. The Raiders still dont know what happened with some speculation that it hit a camera wire, despite denials from NBC.You cant really tell because you cant see the ball the whole way through, Cooper said. It definitely moved, but you cant really tell what actually happened to it.Game notes DL Mario Edwards Jr. participated in his most extensive practice since injuring his hip in the preseason opener but no decision has been made whether to activate him from IR this week. I dont really know yet, he said. Just kind of see how the week goes. ...
