CHICAGO -- Just when it looked as if Cubs right-hander Edwin Jackson had begun to regain his form Tuesday night against the White Sox at U.S. Cellular Field, his outing was washed out by rain. Jackson was cruising along in the bottom of the third inning, having retired seven of the first eight batters he faced, including three strikeouts, when Game 2 of the four-game crosstown series with the White Sox was postponed because of a downpour. No make-up date has been announced. "Its just one of those things, sometimes when you have the kind of season Im having, thats how it is, you feel good and something happens, and you feel bad and something happens," Jackson said. Even though Jacksons effort ultimately didnt count, Cubs manager Dale Sveum liked what he saw from his struggling pitcher. "He came out throwing the ball really well, obviously with a lot of conviction and velocity from the get-go, 92-93 mph cutters as well as his fastball at 96," Sveum said. "Thats kind of the guy we want to go out there all the time, the 86-87 mph sliders and velocity from the get-go and see what happens from there." Jacksons stellar effort wasnt the only one wasted. So too was Wellington Castillos two-run homer in the top of the second that had staked Jackson to a 2-0 lead. "At the end of the day, all that matters is to keep playing, to have the opportunity to be here and to be in the lineup tomorrow," Castillo said. Jackson (1-8) had come into the game with losses in seven of his eight decisions this season. With the way he started Tuesday, he felt he was on his way to finally breaking out of his slump. "I felt pretty good tonight, pretty loose from the beginning," Jackson said. "I felt like I could come out and attacked the strike zone hard and down." Perhaps the only player on either team to benefit from the rainout was White Sox starter Chris Sale (5-2). The hard-throwing lefty had a streak of 23 scoreless innings coming in. Castros homer snapped it but the rainout restored the spurt. Sale, who missed his last start due to tendonitis in his left posterior shoulder, felt good even with the short work and reported no issues. "I pretty much look at this as kind of an extended bullpen," Sale said. "I dont think I threw but 40 (37 to be exact) pitches. I should be able to bounce back pretty quick." Sveum said his team had been looking forward to facing Sale Tuesday. "You hate to waste any time when you get up 2-0 against a pitcher like Sale and hopefully you hang on. If you score two and hopefully a couple more like that, then youve done your share off a guy like that. Its too bad the game had to be cancelled that quick, but we knew that rain was coming." The series shifts to Wrigley Field for a pair of afternoon games (1:20 p.m.) on Wednesday and Thursday. The scheduled pitchers remain the same for Wednesdays game, right-hander Scott Feldman (4-4, 2.80) for the Cubs vs. lefty John Danks (0-0, 4.50). NOTES: The White Sox have won eight of the last 12 meetings with the Cubs, and lead the overall series 49-42. . Coming into Tuesdays game, Cubs pitchers were leading the Major Leagues in a unique category: RBIs, with 15. . The game was cancelled so quickly that an official attendance number was never announced. Buy Shoes Black Friday . This should be celebrated because it will not always be this way. DENVER -- Bruce Bochy cant explain why his team is in such an offensive funk. Were looking for that magic wand, the San Francisco manager said. We are looking for someone to get us going. No one stepped up Monday.Chad Bettis held San Francisco in check by throwing a two-hitter for his first career complete game, Carlos Gonzalez hit a grand slam as part of a six-run third and the Colorado Rockies beat the slumping Giants 6-0.Bettis (12-7) was perfect until Eduardo Nunez singled with two outs in the fifth inning. He struck out seven and walked none.Their guy pitched great. Ill give him that, but at the same time weve been in this for a little while, Bochy said. Its time for us to wake up here. The Giants had the best record in baseball at the All-Star break, but things have unraveled. Theyve gone a major league-worst 16-31 since then, lost their lead in the NL West and are now trying to hang on to a wild-card spot.San Francisco intentionally walked Nolan Arenado to face Gonzalez in the third. Gonzalez lined a fastball from Matt Moore over the fence in right-center for his second grand slam of the season.Gonzalez understood the move. Arenado is one of the top run-producers in the league and the player nicknamed Cargo is in a slump. They took their chances. Didnt work, Gonzalez said. Good for us, bad for them.An erratic Moore (2-4 with Giants, 9-11 overall) allowed six runs in 2 2/3 innings -- his shortest outing of the season. He walked four and threw two wild pitches.I have to be a ton better than that, said Moore, who allowed his first career grand slam. I didnt give us a very good chance to win.Moore, who was acquired from Tampa Bay on July 31, had trouble with his release point in the third. He walked the first two batters of the inning, including Bettis when the pitcher tried to put down a bunt. That paved thhe way to the decisive inning.ddddddddddddTwo batters after Gonzalezs drive, Nick Hundley hit a solo homer to give the Rockies a 6-0 lead. There is no excuse for that third inning. I had plenty of stuff today, Moore said.Bettis was stellar in the best outing of his career, getting 15 groundball outs. He surrendered a leadoff double to Trevor Brown in the sixth, but worked his way out of the jam.The 27-year-old Bettis called this his best game in terms of feel for his pitches. He fell behind leadoff hitter Denard Span 3-0 to start the game, before getting him to ground, and was in command the rest of the way.He could throw any pitch for a strike at any time, Rockies manager Walt Weiss said. That was outstanding by Chad.TRAINERS ROOMGiants: C Buster Posey received a day off after spending 13 innings behind the plate Sunday during a loss in Chicago against the Cubs. Ive got to keep an eye on these guys and keep them fresh, Bochy said.POWER STRUGGLEPart of the problem for the Giants has been a lack of power, with just 36 homers in the second half. Some of their better long ball hitters -- Brandon Crawford, Brandon Belt and Posey -- have gone a combined 243 at bats without leaving the yard.I cant explain it for you, Bochy said. Hopefully, that means well hit a few from this point on.THIS & THATLefty Ty Blach made his major league debut for the Giants in the city where he grew up. He pitched three scoreless innings. ...
