OTTAWA, Ontario -- The Ottawa Senators could overlook their sloppy start thanks to a strong finish.Kyle Turris scored in overtime, lifting the Senators over the Carolina Hurricanes 2-1 on Tuesday night.Dion Phaneuf also scored for the Senators, who were playing their first of ten home games this month. Craig Anderson made 32 saves.Jaccob Slavin scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes, and Cam Ward stopped 30 shots.Ottawa was coming off a nine-day, three-game trip that culminated with an emotional 2-0 win in Edmonton on Sunday night after learning Andersons wife, Nicholle, had been diagnosed with cancer. Its beyond words the way that hes playing right now with the circumstances and what hes going through with his wife, Phaneuf said. Its incredible. Hes an inspiration to all of us, I will tell you that. Hes just incredible to be doing what hes doing for our team right now with what hes going through. To no surprise, the Senators lacked energy and had a slow start but managed to regroup and -- thanks to Anderson -- hung in despite some sloppy stretches.Ottawa coach Guy Boucher expected a slow start after the lengthy road trip and the emotional time his team went through supporting the Andersons, but was pleased with how his team responded after the first period.I was so impressed with how the players battled to get that emotion back and they did it in every possible way, Ottawa coach Guy Boucher said. I thought we really played good in the second, third and the overtime and I believe we deserved it at that point.Tied 1-1 to start the third, both teams had a couple of good chances, but Ward and Anderson could see most of the shots and made the stops.I liked the effort, I liked the execution, Hurricanes coach Bill Peters said. I thought both teams made a push at certain times. Penalty kill was good, could have executed a little better at some offensive situations, but I liked the effort (Tuesday). The Senators struggled mightily in the first period, but thankfully Anderson was solid when the Hurricanes outshot Ottawa 16-5 and controlled much of the action.Carolina scored on its first shot after some poor defensive coverage from the Senators allowed Slavin easy entry from center ice.Ottawa tied it at the 13-minute mark of the first when Phaneufs shot from the point beat Ward low glove side. The Senators were without Mark Stone for the third period as the winger suffered an upper body injury.Carolinas Victor Rask ended his eight-game point streak (four goals, six assists), and Jeff Skinners five-game point streak (four goals, five assists) also ended.Game notes D Thomas Chabot and G Matt OConnor were a healthy scratch for the Senators. Carolinas Ryan Murphy played his first game after suffering a lower body injury in early October that kept him out of the lineup.UP NEXTHurricanes: Play at Nashville Predators on Saturday night.Senators: Host the Canucks on Thursday night. Lewis Hamilton believes Mercedes gap over the rest of the field is significant at the Italian Grand Prix after finishing Friday practice 0.453s clear of his nearest non-Mercedes rival. At the last race in Belgium, Hamiltons teammate Nico Rosberg took pole by just 0.149s from Max Verstappen, which was Mercedes smallest margin to a rival since the Monaco Grand Prix in May, where Red Bulls Daniel Ricciardo secured pole position. But during Friday practice at Monza, Red Bulls power deficit dropped Verstappen and Ricciardo to fifth and sixth, with Ferrari becoming the second best team albeit nearly half a second behind Hamilton. Its hot out there but the track feels really good with lots of grip and I found a good balance in the end, particularly going into my second stint, Hamilton said. So Im really happy with it and we got through our run plan and we are looking very strong this weekend. Its strange how one weekend you are stronger than another [weekend] as a team, but the car feels good this weekend.I have no idea what the gap will be tomorrow, but it looked significant today compared to some of the other races. It will be interesting to see what changes tomorrow.Hamilton suffered a series of front lock ups during his long runs in practice and said getting braking right was one of the biggest challenges at Monza.ddddddddddddeah, its very hard to find braking points. Also you are trying to look after your tyres so you have to find a balance with how far forward you put your brake balance. If you put it further rear your tyres dont last so long because you under-rotate your rears, so you are right on the edge of the grip level of the front tyres throughout the whole braking, making sure you get it right. But a lock-up here is so costly and generally its a one-stop always here, which isnt good.Generally I think they need to do better in the future with the tyre compounds because a one-stop race is so boring for everyone. When you have more stops it puts more confusion into the mix and more opportunity. The fact the super-soft can go quite a big distance here, last year I think it was 26 laps and this year I think it will be something similar -- but it is what it is and we are doing the best job we can with and trying to make sure we dont have a lock up, look after your tyres and dont lose time going through those extra barricades at the chicanes.
