WASHINGTON -- The Milwaukee Brewers looked confused in the first inning Monday against Washington. By the end of the day, though, the Nationals were the ones left dazed at the plate.Junior Guerra outpitched Max Scherzer, Martin Maldonado homered and the Brewers defeated the Nationals 1-0 to snap a four-game losing streak.Junior carried the load today, manager Craig Counsell said after Milwaukee won despite having its first hit taken away as a result of batting out of order in the first inning.Guerra (6-1) allowed only two hits in 7 1/3 innings, striking out seven and walking two. The 31-year-old rookie threw eight scoreless innings of two-hit ball in his previous start and has won three straight. It feels like hes even getting better, Counsell said. In the biggest spots he seems to step up even a little more.Maldonado gave the Brewers the lead in the fifth when he sent Scherzers 2-1 pitch over the visitors bullpen for his third homer. Most of the time, solo bombs, they dont beat you, said Scherzer, who has allowed a league-high 21 homers. It happened today.Jeremy Jeffress pitched the ninth for his 22nd save.Scherzer (9-6) threw 114 pitches in six innings. He gave up four hits while striking out seven and walking three. In three of his past four starts, he hasnt lasted more than six innings.I just havent been quite as efficient over the past couple of outings, Scherzer said. Im kind of scratching my head over that. One day after hitting six homers in a 12-1 win against the Reds, Washington hitters were stifled by Guerra. During one stretch, he retired 12 straight before Jayson Werth singled with two outs in the sixth. Then, with runners on second and third after a walk and a wild pitch, Guerra struck out Wilson Ramos.I was just trying to make quality pitches, keep out of his hot zone and just keep the ball low, Guerra said through a translator.Brewers shortstop Jonathan Villar made a sliding catch of Ben Reveres pop fly along the left-field line to end the eighth.Ive always said the advantage goes to the pitcher when you havent seen him before, Nationals manager Dusty Baker said. We flirted with the fence most of the day and he kind of had us fishing for that split-finger.Fans were still settling in for the traditional 11:05 a.m. July 4 game when the Brewers batted out of order in the first. After Ryan Brauns apparent two-out single, Baker came out to talk to plate umpire Cory Blaser.Ultimately, Jonathan Lucroy, listed third on the lineup card given to the umpires before the game, was charged with an at-bat and an out.I screwed up, Counsell said. I was going with some different lineups yesterday ... and it was just my mistake.Braun, who usually bats third, hit fourth instead Monday and led off the second inning by grounding out.Obviously, against Max Scherzer youre not going to get too many opportunities to have baserunners, Braun said. So it was a challenging way to start the day.GOOD MORNING!Asked what the hardest part of making an 11:05 a.m. start was, Guerra responded: When my alarm went off at 8.Revere said of the early start: Of course 11 is early, but its one of those deals where you just have to wake yourself up, slap yourself in the face or something.TRAINERS ROOMBrewers: 1B Chris Carter, who is 1 for 11 with seven strikeouts vs. Scherzer, was not in the starting lineup.Nationals: RHP Jonathan Papelbon (right rib muscle strain) returned from the 15-day DL and pitched a scoreless ninth. ... Baker held banged-up 2B Daniel Murphy out of the lineup, but he flied out as pinch hitter in the eighth. ... Baker said RHP Joe Ross trip to the 15-day DL with right shoulder inflammation was mainly precautionary, and that if this was late in the season Ross could have pitched.UP NEXTBrewers: RHP Zach Davis (5-4, 4.22 ERA) allowed six runs on eight hits over 4 1/3 innings in his last outing, but had gone 5-0 with a 2.64 ERA in his 10 prior starts.Nationals: LHP Gio Gonzalez (4-7, 4.81 ERA) allowed six runs and six hits in a June 25 loss at Milwaukee. Hes given up three or more earned runs in his last eight starts. Vapormax Off White 2019 .J. -- Pitcher Carl Pavano is retiring after 14 major league seasons. Buy Nike Vapormax Nz . NEW ORLEANS -- The Saints and Falcons?came together for a display of unity Monday night, joining hands in a circle on the field following the national anthem.ESPNs Lisa Salters reported from the sideline during the broadcast that Saints coach Sean Payton reached out to Falcons coach Dan Quinn with the idea earlier in the week and that player leaders from both teams loved it. The coaches left it up to their quarterbacks, Drew Brees and Matt Ryan, to come up with the exact way for that statement to be both unifying and respectful of the national anthem.Payton and Quinn figured it was a great way for players to join the growing protests around the NFL against injustice in America while still making it a message about unity, especially with two longtime rival teams from culturally rich cities. They planned to spend a minute holding hands in thought and prayer.I reached out to Drew [Brees] and just told him we were on board, Ryan said. But I think the big thing was, I mean, obviously, everybody knows whats been going on throughout this entire year and for a long time. And people think things need to change. We all felt like the best way to do it was everybody do it together. And we wanted to send a message loud and clear that unity is probably the best way to make a change, and I thought that came across loud and clear tonight. The gesture was inspired by the latest police shootings in Charlotte, North Carolina, and Tulsa, Oklahoma, this past week. A source suggested to Salter that a handful of players had been feeling outside pressure to join the cause, but they didnt want to do it at the expense of the teams.Saints running back Mark Ingram expressed that very conundrum earlier this week.Well probably come up with something before Sunday. We just want everybody to be on the same page, and we want it to be unity, said Ingram, who has strongly supported the message of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick and others who have protested during the national anthem and who said more than once Friday that his heart is hurting. We want it to be all, everybody, because thats what were trying to do. Were trying to bring evverybody together.dddddddddddd Our nation needs to come together. Everybody needs to care for each other, Ingram said. And thats whats so good about sports. It brings everybody together, no matter what race. These are my brothers in here. Guys I played with in the past, those are my brothers. You dont see color. You just see a guy who you work hard with and go to battle with and work with every single day.I understand that theres differences when you go out to the real world, so we just want to set an example, and we want to bring unity. We want everybody to be together and dont want to do anything that causes division or controversy.Brees was one of the most vocal critics of Kaepernick and his decision to use the national anthem as his forum for protest. Brees said he supported Kaepernicks message but wholeheartedly disagreed with his method because he found it disrespectful to the flag and the sacrifices of military members. Its a serious issue, Brees said after the Falcons 45-32 victory Monday, and we felt like an appropriate way to show our unity and bring attention to that was by making that circle together, everybody lock arms, take a moment of silence, to pray, to be in thought, meditation, whatever you want to do. ... [It was] the way we would like to give attention -- after the national anthem -- in a way that shows were all in this together.Falcons tight end Jacob Tamme issued a statement on Twitter after the game praising the pregame show of unity as what we wanted to show tonight.Said Ingram earlier this week: I know people have different opinions about the anthem. But Kaeps cause and what hes doing it for, for the injustices of not just blacks but anybody who [is a victim of] police brutality ... I know it happens to everybody, whites, blacks, Asians. Its just unfortunate. So I support [the protestors] and everything they stand for 100 percent. But with my team, I want us to do something that we all would be proud of. Its just unfortunate whats going on in our country right now. ' ' '
